I just want to maintain the daily OHLC and Volume data for about 100 assets. I don't want to spend the time, bandwidth and storage maintaining a 8000+ item database.

How can I do that?

Thank you,
Maji

Just remove the asset that you don't need. The default downloader gets data only for the assets in your database.

I did not phrase my question properly.

I want to create a custom database of the assets/securities/mutual funds that I want to track using their daily OHLC and volume information. Selection from the default means going through thousands of items. How can I just type those symbols, save them, download the required history and maintain them?

Thank you,
Maji

Why don't you simple create a new account ("Account" menu). Add the symbols you need then download data for these symbols.
Why do you need a "custom database"?

Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
