The number of listed companies refers to the total number of companies that have shares listed on a given exchange at a specific period. This includes domestic (Incorporated in the same country as the exchange) and foreign (Incorporated in a different country than the exchange) companies and excludes funds and unit trusts.

This item gets the historical number of listed companies, from 1990 to present, for several exchanges including the NASDAQ OMX, NYSE EURONEXT US, Santiago, TSX, BM&FBOVESPA, Mexican Exchange, Bursa Malaysia, Singapore Exchange, MICEX, Saudi Stock Market - Tadawul, Luxembourg SE, Bombay Stock Exchange, National Stock Exchange India, BME Spanish Exchanges, Borsa Italiana, Deutsche Börse, Egyptian Exchange, Irish SE, Istanbul SE, Johannesburg SE, London SE, OMX Copenhagen SE, OMX Helsinki SE, OMX Stockholm SE, Wiener Börse...

For each exchange, a ticker symbol is created and the historical number of listed stocks is associated with that ticker. For example, the number of companies listed on NASDAQ OMX can be found under the ticker symbol: ^Listed_NASDAQ OMX.

If a company has several shares classes then it will be counted only once. Example: a company that has Class-A and Class-B shares will be counted only once.

This yearly data is downloaded from the World Federation of Exchanges website (http://www.world-exchanges.org) and it requires that Microsoft Excel be installed on your PC.
The World Federation of Exchanges is an association that promotes regulated exchanges. The WFE has 52 publicly regulated stock, futures and options exchange members.

Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
