Number of dividend payments per day in the U.S. Stock Market
Using the composite tool and an historical database of dividend payments, I have created an index that gets the total number of dividend distributions by U.S. companies for every trading day. The composite or indice name is "_DIVIDENDS_TOTAL". On February 18, 2011 for example, there were 21 dividend distributions, while on February 11, 2011, there were 187 dividend distributions. The total number of dividend payments has constantly increased since the end of 2001 and then it started decreasing from July 2008. Currently, the average number of dividend distributions for the last 100 trading bars is about 44.
To display the companies that made a dividend payment on a specific date, open the screener, select a date, type the following trading rule "GetDataCount("dividend", "dividend") > 0", then click on "Start".
If you smooth the data with a moving average and display it on a chart, you will see recurrent patterns. There are periods of a year where the number of dividend payments increases and other periods where it decreases.
Dividend data is retrieved from yahoo finance website using the following downloader: History of dividend payment for stocks in the US stock market. It saves historical data of dividend per share payments made by U.S. companies. The data is then saved in the "dividend" database.
Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
