List of Shortable Stocks

Shortable stocks refer to stocks that can be shorted, that is, traders are able to sell these stocks even if they don't own them. Usually, stock shares are borrowed from a broker and sold to another buyer. When the trader want to buy back stock shares (cover its position), these shares are bought and returned to the lender. The whole process is automatically handled by brokerage firms; the shorted stock will usually come from the brokerage's own inventory or from another brokerage firm in case the broker doesn't own the stock.

Traders usually short stocks to profit from a decline. Unlike a long position, a short position is profitable when the underlying security's price decrease. When the stock price starts increasing, the short position starts losing money.

Usually each broker has its own list of shortable stocks. This list contains stocks that are commonly available in the brokerage's inventory. This inventory exists to facilitate the shorting process; the broker uses it to "loan" stocks to traders who want to short them (going short on a stock).

This trading object downloads a list of shortable stocks for the US Stock Market. Currently, the list contains more than 6000 US stocks. The data is stored in the following database "Shortable", which contains a table called also "Shortable".
In the symbols selection control, to get the list of stocks that can be shorted, simply select "Shortable Stock" then set the minimum value of the interval to one.

Each time you run this downloader, new shortable stocks are added and the "Shortable" field of the stocks that can no longer be shorted is set to zero.
Unknown ticker symbols are automatically added to your symbols database. You can disable this by updating the downloader and un-checking the "Automatically add new symbols" option.

Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
