In addition to the AAII Sentiment Survey, the American Association of Individual Investors releases another very interesting report called AAII Individual Investor Asset Allocation Survey. The report is released after a survey conducted every month; in this survey individual investors are asked about their current holdings. The report shows the percentage of individual investors that are invested in different categories; the asset categories are: Stock Funds, Stocks, Bond Funds, Bonds and Cash. For any given date, the sum of the percentages in all these categories is equal to 100%.

Historical data is downloaded from AAII website and is available in Excel format. After it is analyzed, five new ticker symbols are added to your database. Each ticker symbol corresponds to an asset category (The percentage of individual investors that are invested in this asset category over time). The symbols are: ^AAII_Asset_StockFunds, ^AAII_Asset_Stocks, ^AAII_Asset_BondFunds, ^AAII_Asset_Bonds, ^AAII_Asset_Cash.

Data is available beginning from 1987 and shows interest of investors and traders in each category of assets. The five symbols created can be used for example to create market timing or simple trading rules.

The other survey released by the AAII is called the AAII Sentiment Survey and it is conducted every week in order to measure the market sentiment of investors over the next 6 months. AAII Sentiment Survey - Historical Data is the trading item you need in order to create the three AAII sentiment time-series: AAII Bullish, AAII Bearish and AAII Neutral.

Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
