This list contains 1950 ticker symbols. These are ticker symbols of stocks that trade in the Australian stock market.
The Australian securities exchange, or the ASX, is the main stock exchange in Australia. It is based in Sydney and it was formed in 1987. The Australian securities exchange has became the ninth largest stock exchange in the world after a merger in December 2006 between the Australian stock exchange and the Sidney futures exchange. The exchange is a publicly traded company; it is listed on the exchange itself and it offers a fully electronic trading.
The All Ordinaries index used to be the major index of the Australian securities exchange. Today, the main index on the ASX is the S&P/ASX 200, which includes the 200 biggest companies listed on the ASX. Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, Telstra Corporation, National Australia Bank and Commonwealth Bank of Australia are among these companies.
Besides the ASX, the other Australian Stock Market exchanges are:
- The Asia Pacific Exchange Limited (APX), formerly known as the Australia Pacific Exchange Limited
- The Bendigo Stock Exchange or BSX, which was acquired by the National Stock Exchange of Australia (NSX) on 12 April 2005
- The National Stock Exchange of Australia or NSX, formerly known as the Newcastle Stock Exchange
The Australian stock market main regulator is the ASIC, which stands for the Australian Securities and Investments Commissions.
Important notes about this Australian stock market list of symbols:
The "Name1" field contains the yahoo compatible symbol name.
Example: the company 'Adelaide Energy Limited' has 'ADE' as ticker symbol, while its yahoo symbol is 'ADE.AX'.
This Australian Stock market list has also detailed information about the listed companies.
Some of this information details include company full name, description, industry, market...
Australian stock market objects:
- The Yahoo EOD historical quotes could be used to download historical quotes data. This item retrieves the yahoo-compatible name from the "name1" field.
- The ASX Historical data is another end-of-day quotes downloader. I personally prefer using this item because it downloads data for much more stocks.
- The ASX Fundamental data item retrieves fundamental data for companies that trade in the Australian stock market. This item creates an historical database with ten fields. Fundamental data includes market capitalization, dividend yield, price earnings ratio, earning per share, earnings yield...

Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
