This is an index published monthly by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and is used to predict future movements of the economy.

This composite is based on several economic indicators. They are all leading indicators which mean that their changes are likely to precede changes in the economy. These economic indicators include: state initial unemployment insurance claims, state-level housing permits, interest rate spread between the 10-year Treasury bond and the 3-month Treasury bill and the delivery times from the institute for Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing survey.

The leading index for the United States as well as other composite indices of leading indicators (such as the Conference Board LEI) are used by many economists and investors for predicting what is going to happen to the economy in the near future.

The data of this index is seasonally adjusted and it spans from 1982 to present. The data is downloaded in CSV format, parsed then saved to the database under the ticker symbol: ^USSLIND.

Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
