US Indices

This list of symbols contains major U.S. indices. The indices fall into one of the following categories: Down Jones, New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, S&P, Other US, Treasury and Commodities. For example, the Dow Jones category contains four indexes: Down Jones Composite Average, whose symbol name is ^DJA, Down Jones Industrial Average (^DJI), Down Jones Utility Average (^DJU) and Down Jones Transportation Average (^DJT).
The list contains the symbol names as well as the indexes full name. Historical end-of-day data can be downloaded using Yahoo EOD historical quotes. The yahoo item gets security names from the "Name2" field by default. And when this field is empty, as this is the case with this list, it gets symbol names from the "Name" field.

There are 37 symbols in this list. All indexes are available in the Yahoo database and most of them have at least 20 years of historical data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average data spans from October 1928 to present. The index that has the less bars is the S&P COMPOSITE 1500 INDEX; its data spans from January 2004 to present.

Indian Indices:
The National Stock Exchange of India main indices can be downloaded using NSE Nifty - S&P CNX Nifty
The Bombay Stock Exchange main index, SENSEX, can be downloaded using BSE Sensex
