Industry and Sector Information for the US Stock Market
Almost one month ago, I have created and uploaded a trading object that downloads industry names for stocks listed on US exchanges and updates the industry field of each stock in your database.
The same trading item gets also sector data but do not use it. This is why I have decided to update this item and create a new one that will also update sector information for US listed companies.
The previous item (Update the Industry Name of your U.S. Stocks) as well as the current one are very easy to use. You just need to click on the Start button and let the trading object performs the download, the parsing and the update. The whole process takes less than 30 seconds. You can check the list of industries and list of sectors by selecting "Symbol" in the menu then clicking on "Categories".
Note that a symbol or stock is not directly associated with a sector. It is associated with an industry, which in turn, is associated with a sector and this is how a stock can be linked to a sector. In order to update a stock's sector programmatically you should first associate it with an industry then set the stock's sector. The sector name will then be linked to the industry you have previously specified for that stock.
The different sectors created by this trading item are: Financial, Technology, Healthcare, Services, Industrial Goods, Utilities, Basic Materials and Consumer Goods.
Trading financial instruments, including foreign exchange on margin, carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to invest in financial instruments or foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss of some or all of your initial investment and therefore you should not invest money that you cannot afford to lose. You should be aware of all the risks associated with trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
